He was born in 5 January 1825, Roane, TN. (There is mention that he was a 'native of Rea Co., TN.')

A veteran of the Mexican American War.

He enlisted on the 3 December 1862 at McMinnville.

Was wounded at Murfreesboro (Stone's River), 31 December 1862, and was granted leave, in Atlanta, 12 January 1863 to get over his wound.

Was on hospital duty after this until to April 1863.

Is on list who have took the Oath in Knoxville on the 19 December 1863.

Married Caroline Lou Stults, born 1829 died 1918, at Bloomington Springs, Putnam Co, TN.  They had two children Rachel E. and Martin Luther Mathis.

He died 31 August 1875 in Tennessee and is buried in the Owens Cemetery, (Mount Union United Methodist Church), Cookville, Jackson Co, TN.
